This past February, 22 young women competed in these preliminaries and more than $1,500 was awarded in scholarships and prizes. The Board of Trustees of the Miss America Organization announced today groundbreaking changes for the 2019 Miss America Competition by declaring the 51 women representing their home states and the District of Columbia will no longer be judged on outward physical appearance.
